The rhythm that works
Two nights minimum per place, three hours maximum in the car, and one activity per day. Children remember the elephant sanctuary and the pool, not the fourth temple.
Book connecting rooms rather than a family suite where you can — it is usually cheaper and everyone sleeps better.
What to do
Ethical elephant sanctuaries, waterfall swims at Erawan, the sticky waterfalls at Bua Tong, boats in Phang Nga, and cooking classes (children love the market tour). Skip the tiger parks and the crocodile farms.
Practical
Car seats are not standard — ask in advance and check the vehicle on arrival. Formula, nappies and familiar food are widely available in cities and on Samui and Phuket; less so on small islands. Travel insurance with children's medical cover is essential.
